Your test starts at the kitchen table before dawn with a weather picture, airfield conditions, and a rough timeline. Candidates often undercook this part and show up hoping to figure it out at the desk. Do the opposite. Build a simple, crisp flight pack so you can brief without rummaging.
I structure a CPL test plan in three layers. First, the big picture: can the intended route be flown legally and comfortably today. Second, the performance and mass and balance numbers for this specific aircraft, on these runways, with this wind and density altitude. Third, a PLOG that shows time, fuel, headings, and altitudes with space for changes.
Examiners love a clean, legible plan that anticipates what could change. Mine usually includes a printed TAF and METAR summary for departure, destination, and a third field within 40 to 60 nm as a natural diversion option. A NOTAM sheet with the three relevant items highlighted in pen impresses more than a tablet full of unread data. If your route skirts a TMZ or RMZ, know the transponder and radio requirements by heart. If your home base sits under a shelf of Class D, have your altitudes and exits selected to keep you legal without threading needles.
The performance page catches many candidates. Run both directions for the departure runway before you arrive, because wind shifts do happen. Then, when you have the actual ATIS, update the numbers neatly. If your POH splits takeoff distance into ground roll and distance to 50 feet, write both, state which one you are using as the controlling figure, and add the regulatory or company factor your school applies. For mass and balance, show the calculation all the way to a plotted point. If your school uses a spreadsheet, print and sign it. If using a manual template, write the arms, weights, and moments clearly. Be ready to answer two questions without looking: where your CG sits relative to the envelope, and what adding or removing 10 kilograms in the baggage does to it.
The preflight that sets the tone
Once you meet your examiner, the opening ten minutes often set the tone for the next two hours. You want to be unhurried but decisive. Offer a succinct briefing: route, alternates, fuel plan, weather, airspace pinch points. Then show them your performance and mass and balance. If asked about NOTAMs, do not recite the entire list. State your takeoff briefing out loud: runway, initial heading or nav plan, rotations, emergency actions, and abort point. A clean, confident takeoff brief that mentions where you will land if the engine coughs before and after rotation tells the examiner you are thinking ahead.
Handling the radio with authority
ATC will not give you points, but they can help you look like you belong. Use standard EASA phraseology, and keep it succinct. I hear candidates pad calls with chatter when nerves rise. Shrink the sentences. State aircraft type and call sign, position or stand, request, and information received. Read back clearances precisely, then fly them. If you need something, ask early and plainly.
En route on the nav leg, call the next information service without prompting. Open your call with full details the first time, then use readbacks and short acknowledgments. If your route crosses an RMZ, state your intention to enter with altitude and QNH set. If you are skirting a TMZ, mention your squawk. When you get a traffic call, report the traffic in sight or not in sight, then tell the examiner your lookout pattern and plan to avoid surprise TCAS RAs in controlled airspace later in your career.
In the test world as in the real one, dense radio transmissions often accompany busy cockpit moments, like when you are aligning for a short field takeoff or planning a diversion. Train yourself to prioritize: aviate, navigate, communicate. If a call comes during a critical turn in the diversion, fly the turn first, then answer. The examiner will be watching to see whether the radio ever owns you. It should not.
Departures and the first five minutes
Many CPL failures sprout in the first five minutes airborne. The takeoff roll feels fast after months of circuits and general handling, and candidates rush the after takeoff checks. Fly the numbers you briefed. Rotate at Vr, set the initial attitude, confirm positive rate and retract gear if appropriate, then accelerate to your chosen climb speed. If the runway aligns with an obstacle departure path or a low level VFR exit corridor, stick to it with precision. As soon as you are stabilized in the climb, call for the after takeoff checks as a flow, then confirm with the printed checklist. If you are solo, you will speak the items yourself. Touch the fuel pump, verify off if permitted, check Ts and Ps in the green, set climb power. Crack the lookout, pick an early traffic reference, and level your forehead before you level the wings.
The navigation leg that sings
The CPL nav leg is not a sightseeing contest. This is where your planning meets the weather and your time management. Aim to hit your first turning point inside two minutes of plan. Use ground features with strong edges: rivers, coastline changes, major railways, VOR radials if available, wind farms, power lines that run obvious diagonals. Forecast drift should not surprise you if you built a wind picture that morning, but it often does when the day warms and the gradient shifts. Watch your track, hold a mental 1 in 60 rule, and correct in small, deliberate bites.
I teach candidates to talk themselves through a leg without announcing it to the cockpit. Headings are a promise you made on the ground. Time is the keeper of that promise. Fuel is the price you pay to keep it. Every five minutes, ask quietly: on track, on time, fuel on plan. If the answer is no, make a change and note the new expectation. Examiners relax when they see you manage drift, distance, and time in near real time. They tense up when you press on, hoping.
At some point the examiner will ask for a diversion. When that happens, smile inwardly. Diversions are where you can show command of the aircraft and workload. Take ten seconds to look outside and bank towards safety if your present course is bounded by busier airspace or rising ground. Then draw a clean line on the chart, estimate a heading, time, and fuel. You do not need perfect math, you need a justifiable plan. Use your wind vector roughly. If you cannot do mental true to magnetic corrections confidently, pick a magnetic shortcut using chart isogonic lines on the margin in advance. Give ATC your new intentions and altitude before they ask. Then fly the plan and update it with measured groundspeed.
If GPS is installed and legal for VFR navigation, manage it as a backup and crosscheck, not a crutch. Examiners vary in how much they accept electronic nav on the test, but all will judge your raw navigation sense. If you do look at the moving map, do it as a scan item and keep your eyes outside more than in.
General handling: smooth edges, sharp tolerances
Stalls are a dialogue with the wing, not a gymnastics contest. Set up precisely. For a clean stall, stabilize, reduce power smoothly, hold altitude with gentle back pressure, keep straight with rudder, and call the approach to stall as buffet or the stall warner appears. Recover with minimal height loss using forward pressure to reduce angle of attack, then smoothly add power and level the wings with coordinated rudder and aileron. Demonstrate you can manage the nose without snatching. For the approach configuration, add gear and flap as briefed, include a descending stall if required by your examiner’s profile, and recover on first signs rather than full break unless asked otherwise. Avoiding a secondary stall is the exam within the exam.
Steep turns usually sit at 45 degrees of bank. Roll in with a touch of power, lead the rollout by about 20 degrees, and hold altitude within tolerances. Use outside references first, then check the altimeter. I have seen candidates apply rolling rudder with aileron input in these turns, which tells the examiner you are wrestling rather than managing. Keep your feet alive and the ball centered. If you feel behind, roll out, reset, and try again rather than tighten into a descending spiral. The examiner wants accuracy and self control more than bravado.
Practice slow flight at a speed just above the stall warning with configuration changes. Add flap with coordinated power, then take flap away and anticipate ballooning. On a retractable, a gear cycle in slow flight shows you can guard against sink and pitch change while respecting Vfe and Vlo.

If the test includes basic instrument flight, you will don the hood or pull the screens and fly a short sequence: straight and level, standard rate turns, flight school climbs and descents, then an unusual attitude recovery. Set a stable power and trim first. Scan in a tidy T, and speak your actions if that steadies your nerves. For unusual attitudes, pause long enough to identify nose high or nose low, then fix the primary problem. Nose high, power on, wings level with minimal bank, then set attitude. Nose low, reduce power, level wings, and recover from the descent, respecting limits. Smooth is fast, jerky is slow.
Abnormal and emergency procedures: calm beats clever
Every examiner I know will throw at least one power loss. The classic is an engine failure after takeoff at a safe altitude, though some will give it at a marginal altitude to see your immediate plan. Pitch for the target glide speed, pick a landing site within a few seconds, and state it. Turn towards it if practical. If height allows, work the restart flow crisply, then commit to the forced landing and brief the mayday. I expect you to check mixture, fuel selector, pump, throttle, carb heat or alternate air, and ignition, then secure the engine when it quits for good. If the aircraft has a constant speed prop, think about coarse pitch when you secure. Touch only what you must, speak the rest. You should be high on final and slip to make the spot. An examiner will not reward a beautiful pattern that floats into a fence.
Systems drills may include a flap failure, alternator failure, radio loss, or high oil temperature. When teaching, I ask candidates to follow a two step discipline: first, fly a stable platform, second, open the checklist. Many busts happen because the pilot dives for a fix, forgets airspeed, and arrives at the circuit unstable. If you lose flaps, extend your base leg and final, aim a bit higher, and land with speed management front of mind. If you lose the alternator, shed load early, broadcast a plan while radios still sing, and get on the ground before the battery dies. If your radio fails, reset once, then set a sensible transponder code and fly a standard joined circuit where legal, with maximum lookout. None of this is exotic. It is just deliberate.
If you are on a multi engine test, the asymmetric profile begins with recognition. Dead foot, dead engine is a memory aid, not a law of physics. Confirm with power and prop lever checks at safe altitude and speeds. If you feather, do it smoothly and trim carefully. Blue line is not an aspiration, it is life insurance. If you fly an asymmetric circuit, plan your base leg to avoid tight turns toward the dead engine at low speed, and be conservative on visual judgment. Talk early and work the problem slowly and correctly.
Approaches and landings: exact more than elegant
You will almost certainly be asked for at least two different landings. A normal landing, then a short field or flapless, sometimes a glide approach. The CPL standard rewards energy management and centerline control more than artistry. Bring the airplane to the runway at a sensible stabilized speed, aligned, with the right amount of power for the configuration.
Short field technique needs numbers. Fly the final at the approach speed from the POH for the landing weight, trimmed so you are not heaving the yoke. Carry a tickle of power to arrest sink and control the flare length. Touch down in the aiming zone you briefed, then raise the flaps on a suitable airplane and brake with purpose without skidding. Do not get lured into hovering over the numbers. Put it down and make it stick.
Flapless landings demand patience. Aim further along, carry a touch more speed, and hold the flare until the main wheels want to roll. If there is a crosswind, show confident into wind aileron on roll out. Many candidates forget to hold controls into wind after touchdown. That tiny habit tells an examiner whether you plan to fly commercially in gusts and not drift toward the edge lights.
The ground segment: what you say matters
After shutdown, some examiners will debrief immediately. Others will leave you to tally your postflight numbers, close the flight plan if required, and put the machine to bed. Keep your professional skin on all the way. Park straight, respect the lines and marshaller if present, and avoid fast taxiing. In the paperwork review, be concise and honest. If you made an error, name it and name your correction. I once had a candidate confess he undersped the first third of final and then gave me a thoughtful risk analysis of why he went around. That was a pass with margin, because judgment beat ego.
Your oral knowledge will likely be sampled throughout. Expect questions like, what are the VMC minima for this segment of airspace at this altitude, or, how would you recalculate landing performance if the surface changes to wet grass. Do not guess. Give ranges and conditions if you are unsure, and bring the POH or EASA references into the answer. Better yet, show how you would adjust your plan: choose a longer runway, increase approach speed marginally on wet surfaces where POH advises, and add a landing distance factor that meets your organization’s policy.
Building test day stamina
A CPL ride is a long event. Fatigue shows later, in steep turns and on the third landing, and in radio calls that start to blur. In pilot school, we schedule two realistic mock tests in the week prior, one in choppy midday thermals and one in calmer evening air. The first builds resilience, the second builds precision. I also ask candidates to break in their exact cockpit workflow across three flights: knee board on the same leg, pens in the same pocket, same headset cable routing, same tablet brightness. Ritual reduces surprise.
Hydrate. Eat something you know agrees with your stomach. Trim your kit to essentials. Tape your pen to your kneeboard if you are a serial dropper. Flying a nice nav leg while forgetting altitude compliance near airspace shelves. Solve it by writing upper and lower limits beside every leg on the PLOG. Letting workload explode during a diversion. Solve it by turning toward safety first, then drawing and flying a simple, defensible plan. Mishandling an approach to stall and dropping a wing. Solve it by practicing recognition and smooth recovery at altitude until your hands default to unload, power, level, climb. Going quiet under pressure. Solve it by narrating short, professional briefs before action points: takeoff, approach, abnormal checklists.
These are not mysteries. They are human. You are managing your own attention as much as the airplane.
From flight school habits to commercial discipline
A subtle shift happens when you cross from flight school training to a commercial check. In school, you are forgiven for operating in a narrow bubble, trusting the instructor to catch the outer edges. On the CPL, you are the backstop. That shows in small habits: closing loops without being asked, keeping your head outside more, making the radio do work for you rather than the other way around.

You will feel the change most in how you brief. Commercial flying is built on shared mental models. Even when you are alone in the cockpit, brief out loud as if your crew is Additional reading there. The debrief you give yourself
Whether you pass or not, capture what the test revealed about your habits. If your nav leg drifted because you did not check groundspeed against forecast, fold an automatic five minute groundspeed check into every future cross country. If your stall recoveries were fine but rough, schedule two more hours with an instructor to polish them. If your radio calls frayed in a busy pattern, ask a friend to ride along and play examiner while you fly a mixed sequence, forcing yourself to prioritize calmly.
Your CPL license is a license to be paid for your discipline. The airplane does not change the day after you pass. You do. You start treating normal days like they might become complex, and complex days like they can be simplified with a good plan and gentle hands.
